The Animorphs

Jake Berenson

Jake aka the Fearless Leader was unofficialy appointed as the leader by Marco. He knew he had to take charge, he was the only one with the leadership qualities. Jake was just a normal 13 year old boy until he took that infamous shortcut through the construction site. He enjoyed playing video games with his best friend Marco, playing basketball and hanging out with his big brother Tom. Then he was thrown into a world of danger and had to make the tough desicions that no one else would. He used his friends for their strengths, he planned the missions and he led the animorphs eventually to victory. He's responsible, strong, cool under pressure and knows when it's necessary to take charge.

Rachel (Berenson)

It has never been clarified what Rachel's surname is, though most fans and fanfic writers use Berenson as she is cousins with Jake. Rachel looks like your typical snobby, beautiful, tall, blonde airhead. However readers saw right from the beginning that Rachel was, as Marco nicknamed her, Xena - warrior princess. Brave, fearless and smart. Her rash desicions and inability to see all the dangers stopped her from being leader material, but she was the best fighter in the animorphs. Strong-willed and adventurous, Rachel often got into trouble but when needed, was always one the front line, shouting 'Let's Do It!'. She feared nothing, and was even brave and strong in her eventual demise at the end of the series. As well as being a fighter, her other three main skills were shopping, gymnastics and doing well in school. She was too tall to ever be really good at gymnastics, but she still carried on. Even being an animorph didn't stop her from shopping and getting good grades.

Relationships: Tobias, her love that although progressed more than Jake and Cassie's, never got to its peak because of her death, and because Tobias was trapped in bird morph. Best friends, Cassie and Melissa. Cousin, Jake. Sisters, Jordan and Sara.

Tobias

Tobias is a complex character. Before becoming an animorph, Tobias was a shy, thoughtful boy. Often bullied, he didn't really have any friends. His parents both disappeared when he was a baby and he was shuttled between his abusive, drunk Uncle's house and his slave-driving Aunt's house. When he became an animorph he enjoyed the freedom he could have from being a bird, being able to soar in the sky without a care. He enjoyed it a bit too much when he got trapped in morph, became a nothlit. He then lived his days as a bird of prey, killing mice to eat, with his thoughtful boy mind trapped inside his bird body. In book #13 he regained the power to morph, though he still had to live in his bird body. He could even morph into his human body, but only for two hours at a time. Later on we find out his father was none other than Elfangor, the andalite who gave them the power to morph. Elfangor had had him with Loren while in human morph. He later is reunited with his blind mother, Loren.

Cassie

Cassie was the moral voice of the group. She had quarms about morphing animals as she felt it was violating them and had trouble killing the controllers. Cassie was perceptive, caring and level-headed. She was an anomoly in that if she was ever put into an alternate universe, it would begin to break down, as she could see through the walls of anti-reality. She loved animals, and lived on a farm - a great resource for animal DNA, as well as her mother working in a zoo, which helped the animorphs get their battle morphs. She was the peace-maker of the group and was very empathetic. Her connection to the animals made her the best at morphing.

Relationships: Jake, her 'crush'. Ronnie, her boyfriend in book 54, Best friend, Rachel.

Marco

Marco was a jokester. He felt that because his life was so bad, if he didn't make a joke of everything, he would 'end up killing himself'. Marco lived with his father and believed that his mother drowned at sea. We of course later find out that she was infact infected with none other than the top yeerk, Visser One. Marco, even though he coined the term Animorphs, was reluctant to enter the fight, as he did not want anything to happen to him which would hurt his father, but after finding out about his mother he entered the fight with vigour. The self confessed pussycat to Rachel's Xena, he was never a coward, just more careful, and tried to treat each of their missions as a joke. He was, however, always the first to point out when a mission was totally crazy, but never backed down from a task.

Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill

Ax had always lived in his brother's, the great Prince Elfangor, shadow. When he crash landed on earth he was a dedicated aristh in the Andalite's army and wanted to be just like his brother. Strict on his rules and conduct, he was reluctant about sharing and helping the animorphs. Eventually he realised that Elfangor had broken the rule of Seerow's Kindness and given them the power to morph, so he felt it was okay to team with them, and share some information. He was always an outsider of the group, even near the end of the books he was going to betray them, until he realised that his fellow andalites were planning on blowing up earth. He realised then he cared more about the humans than he realised. After seeing Jake's strength at dealing with the Andalites when they came to earth after the war, he knew he had made the right choice in a Prince. He was always fiercely loyal to his home planet and people, but he almost always put his trust and faith in his temporary Prince, Jake. When the war was over he was rightfully given the title Prince, and an expert on all humans.
